The photos that users share on RealSelf are incredible. They have done more to bring the realities of cosmetic treatments to light than any other platform. So when a user decides to share a treatment story or doctor review, we want to encourage them to share photos.

In addition, we want them to share as much information about each photo as possible. Sometimes a caption on a photo can be more valuable to a reader than the actual text in a review.

Research & Observations:

  • Users want to post anonymously, especially sensitive photos

  • Users are eager to share details about a photo - giving back to the community feels good!

  • Users would categorize photos if there was an obvious benefit to their readers

  • Users were already editing photos in other apps before posting to RealSelf

A few examples of how users obscured their photos with other apps.

(Many users utilized blurring and stickers to cover exposed body parts)

Features:

  • A ‘photo only’ update, eliminating the burden of writing a text update

  • Stickers to obscure photos

  • Tagging photos by the stage of treatment - Before, Recovery, After, or Wish Pic

  • Collage tool for side-by-side ‘before’ and ‘after’ photos
